Q & A: Erin Lamont

Breaking walls, pushing limits and taking it off, The Lalas Burlesque Show is headed for “big time” status recognition. Last week The Lalas packed “standing room only” show at Bardot Hollywood. The burgeoning fresh and naughty burlesque dance troupe is created and choreographed by Erin Lamont. Lamont has been working professionally as a choreographer/dancer/model ever since she graduated from college with a B.A in Dance and a B.B.A in Marketing from Western Michigan University. She happens to be one of the hardest working choreographers on the scene today and we were able to get her to share a few of her secrets to success as well as some behind-the-scenes insight.

Q: Hi Erin. The Lalas Burlesque is one of the hottest acts on the Hollywood scene right now. What prompted you to create The Lalas Burlesque show?

Erin Lamont: I lived right up the street from a lounge that had a burlesque group perform – I saw their show – then directly called the owner and told him that I had girls that were hotter – better bodies – more technically trained – and that I could bring a crowd. He signed us on for 7 months after our first performance!

Q: How did you get into dance and the entertainment business?

Erin Lamont: It’s that age old stereotypical story. I took my first tap class at 7 years of age and fell in love. I started choreographing in college, where I studied dance and business and promptly, 7 days after graduating from college, I received my first dance contract working on a cruise ship. I hopped right into that gig and have been working ever since!

Q: Reactions have been strong and positive from The Lalas’ audiences. What is your secret to standing out and wowing the crowds?

Erin Lamont: Honestly, it’s my girls. They are freakishly phenomenal. They have a quality that just makes people stop and stare. The choreography and concepts are extremely important, don’t get me wrong – but just having a Lala stand in front of a crowd of hundreds and maybe just unbuttoning a shirt for 3 minutes – makes the crowd CRAZY! I love watching my show come to life.

Q: The girls in the show are all dynamic, beautiful and talented. What are some of the traits that you look for when you hold auditions for The Lalas Burlesque troupe?

Erin Lamont: This might not be the sexiest answer – but I look for that dancer that is punctual, and really pulled up for the audition. She takes care of herself. And equally as important, I just have to like them . There are so many talented girls working in this business but 3/4 of them I would never even consider – just because they have the wrong attitude. SO the bottom line: on time, prepared, and cool as hell. That’s why I have only 8 Lalas.

Q: Is being a part of such a competitive dance genre anything like the cult classic movie “Showgirls?”

Erin Lamont: Absolutely – that catty sh#t happens on a daily basis. One-upping a girl at a show or at an audition. But, my point of view is that there is enough work for everyone. I know that we are not the only burlesque show going on in LA, but we are sure as hell the best one. The dancers that are usually complaining are the ones that aren’t working, so I like to stay away from that.

Q: How do audiences interact with you and the girls after a show? I am sure people are already asking for autographs backstage.

Erin Lamont: They do! Especially when we have a stage that is more intertwined with the crowd. Pictures – autographs – business cards. Keep them coming!

Q: An evolution like the Pussycat Dolls is what comes to my mind. What can The Lalas’ fans expect to see in the future from your troupe?

Erin Lamont: The business model I have laid out for the Lalas is similar to that of the Pussycat Dolls – before they “made it big.” We are a burlesque group – and I plan on keeping it that way. The Lalas will be an international brand – we will have a reality show – we will have live shows performing simultaneously throughout the industry, whether it be in a casino , on a cruise ship, or private parties and events. Our shows will continue to WOW! I intend on keeping quality the forefront of our name.

Q: Are there any other projects that you are working on aside from The Lalas?

Erin Lamont: Along with being the creator and director of the Lalas – I am also an independent contractor choreographing for commercial, TV and film. I am currently working as a choreographer on Country Music Television’s new hit show “Your Chance to Dance” A commercial for Johnny Rockets, and the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant.

The Top Ten Q & A: Kelis

Harlem-bred vocalist Kelis left her parents' home at 16, but continued her education at the famed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. 2 years later with the support of producers The Neptunes, she landed herself a recording deal. In 2003 Kelis released Tasty which included the SMASH HIT "Milkshake." In 2006, her fourth album, Kelis Was Here, was released and led by the duly assertive "Bossy."

Currently her hit single “Acapella” is dominating the dance charts. Kelis has made it very clear that she isn’t going anywhere. Her next single “4th of July” hits the airwaves next month. She will be performing for all the gays at the Los Angeles Pride Celebration on Saturday, June 12, 2010 @ 6:00pm! I got a chance to talk to Kelis about her Upcoming record, her mother’s advice and L.A. Pride. Check it out!

When did you realize you wanted to pursue music as a career? When they told me they would pay me for it! ;) lol! I didn’t really have a plan, I just sang and hoped it would all sort of happen.

Who/ What inspired you to be a singer? I wasn’t really aware of inspiration until recently. I just did what was inside of me. At a young age I naturally started singing; it was a natural progression of who i was and wanted to be.

What are you currently listening to in your iPod/ mp3 player? The last record that I intentionally listened to was “Mezzanine” by Massive Attack, it’s a glorious and amazing album from beginning to end.

What can we expect from your stage show? I am pretty disorganized, my show changes constantly it’s a surprise to me as well, I have a gig tonight and I still don’t even know what I am wearing, lol.

Describe a “Kelis” experience in 5 words. Impromptu. Glitter. Loud. Fun. Shoes

If you had to pick ONE artist to sing with dead or alive who would it be? Sam Cooke, his voice is like velvet, i just love him!

What is something that drives you crazy, what is your biggest pet peeve? A loose chewer literally revolts me!

Your upcoming record Flesh Tone is slated for a 2010 release, can you tell me a bit about that project? People like to say that this is my comeback record. I don’t really look at it that way, just get ready because I didn’t “come back” I MULTIPLIED.

Mega DJ David Guetta is really HOT right now, can you tell us a bit about the track/ tracks your working on with him for your next record? One of the tracks I worked with David on is “Scream” It’s a very hard record, extremely rhythmic and the lyrics that i wrote are like a deep inhale, it takes me to another place.

What are you looking forward to most about Los Angeles Pride? That I don’t have to travel! Lol I love being home. MORE BOOKINGS IN LA PLEASE! lol This is my first LA Pride Celebration so I am pretty excited, Its going to be fun!

In a “fantasy world” if Kelis were to have a lesbian lover, who would it be and why? I would clone myself because i don’t like that many people. Lol Like my mother said, “If you’re not good company for yourself then your not good company for anyone else.”

The Top Ten Q & A: FoxJazelle

Foxjazelle is back on the scene with her sophomore album Boy, Girl, Whateva, now more than ever, the eyes of the GLBTQ community are looking to see how Foxxjazell’s music will respond to past controversy in the hip hop industry, and the new album undoubtedly delivers.

Coined by Tyra Banks as “America’s first transgendered hip hop artist” during an appearance on The Tyra Banks Show, Foxxjazell has experienced formidable success during her career in an industry generally plagued by homophobia. Her music continues to be featured on radio stations across the continent, and her music video for “Split Enz” recently hit number four on LOGO network’s “The Click List.”


Where did the name Foxxjazell come from? I've always identified with the Fox because of the animal's independence & beauty, and I've really like the name Jazell.....so I brought them together and created Foxxjazell.

What was your main inspiration for Boy, Girl, Whateva? It's my way of embracing and showing love for both the male and female sides of my gender identity. People get so caught up in labels and names, but if you know yourself and who you are, it doesn't matter. Take me as a boy, girl, whateva...Just know that Foxxjazell is hip-hop's first transgender rapper.

If you had to pick your favorite song on the record what would it be? All Of You... most definitely! The lyrics speak hard on the feelings of rejection that are often felt by trans girls when they're in love with a boy...something I've gone through a lot.

Who/ What was your inspiration to be a rap singer? My inspirations are broad and diverse, but then again...so am I! lol. Salt & Pepa, Madonna & the rapper T.I. inspire me and my music.

When you released your first record were you prepared to deal with being a spokesperson for the transgendered community? Most def. I didn't get in the rap game because I wanted to be the best rapper. That's not important to me -- being the best. My main focus is to convey a message and story that's not often told, especially in the world of hip hop. I'm fortunate to be able to express myself artistically, and have fans identify with the emotions, lyrics and even drama of my music.

Did you tell your parents before you decided on your transition or did you start transitioning and then thought, “It's time to tell my parents.” It's like I came out to my parents twice. At age 12, I told them that I was gay. And then when I was 16, I said, "Scratch that. I'm a trans woman." But overall, it felt like they knew before I even told them how I felt inside.

When you decided to move forward with your transition did you feel disconnected with your blood family? Did you feel more connected with your Gay Family? Initially, I felt that my blood family didn't understand my transition...they wanted me to look like the person they'd always seen. So I ran away from home at an early age and sought out a gay family that embraced me, knew the meaning of transgendered and understood what I was going through. I later reconnected with my relatives, and they're now my biggest supporters. I don't recommend for kids to run away from home -- it makes things very hard -- but it's what I did, and I don't regret it.

Was your transition a natural progression for you or did you have to fight yourself? It's a constant struggle for me because I still embrace both sides of my gender - male and female - and they impact my daily life. I talk a lot about it in my album -- notably named "Boy, Girl, Whateva".

Pick your favorite Trans Superstar? Why? I think Candis and Amanda are both Fabulous, but the transgender model Isis King from America's Next Top Model - Cycle 11 is my trans superstar. She struts with courage and ambition, and she has risen from a lot of hardship to be where she is today ... a true fighter to be admired in our community.

What’s next for Foxxjazell? I just dropped my new album Boy, Girl, Whateva with a huge album release event at Splash Bar in NYC. It's now available on iTunes and online via Foxxjazellmusic.com. I'm also really hyped about headlining the "Boy, Girl, Homoevolution" show on June 23 in San Francisco at the El Rio. It's a two-hour televised music concert and theatrical production which will feature my performance along with other out hip hop artists.

The Top Ten Q & A: Wynter Gordon

Wynter Gordon is not new to the business but she is new to our eyes, in fact she has been popping up all over the place. Especially in our GAY neck of the woods! Miss Gordon has sung the hooks on FloRida’s “Sugar” and is the featured vocal on David Guetta’s “Toyfriend” and “Dirty Talk.” This talented vocalist has a lot more up her sleave though, unlike most modern day pop stars she is writing her music! After penning songs for Danity Kane, Jennifer Lopez and Mary J Blige she definitely got what it takes!

Let me introduce you to the multitalented Wynter Gordon:

You performed at Jeffrey Sanker's 20th Anniversary of White Party Palm Springs, how did it feel to follow in the White Party footsteps of Jennifer Lopez, Toni Braxton and Lady Gaga? I was pretty thrilled, just to be considered to do the show means a lot to me. It means the most that I'm working, doing something I love, and taking the right steps in better direction because I see the proof in others before me.

You have been writing songs for big names in the music industry, what inspired you to be a singer? Actually the singing came before the writing. I was singing in school since the first grade. On a professional level, my writing was discovered first.

Is there one song that you have heard that you connected with on such a level that you wish you had written it? The Climb performed by Miley Cyrus. Its sums my imperfect self up perfectly with just the right amount of that heart wrenching emotion.

“Dirty Talk” and “Toyfriend” are a couple of my favorite dance tracks for 2010. Have you always wanted to do dance music? Why thank you! I've always been pretty well rounded in the things I listen to. I'm not a genre hater. lol. I like dance music a lot! I used to listen to it in elementary, sneaking KTU (103.5 in NY) when my mom wasn't around. It was a natural progression as I write and sing in all genres, and when I started traveling the world and meeting new musicians, it just flowed. My music is here now but I know I will grow.

How did the collaborations with David Guetta come about? My way cool A&R(at the time) Mike Caren set up a suprise session for me and him. David just let me do my thing.

What are you currently listening to in your iPod/ mp3 player? “Walking on a Dream” by Empire of the Sun, “Kids” by MGMT, “The First Cut is the Deepest” by Sheryl Crow and “Starry Eyed” by Ellie Goulding. I literally just walked off the train listening to those songs on my ipod.

Describe your music-making process. Do you have any upcoming collaborations on the record? I sit with a track and it usually evokes some sort of emotion. Either it’s hatred or resentment from an old boy toy or missing and loving them. Or I feel free and wanna party. A great producer can inspire a writer. On occasion in the middle of the night or walking down the street, I'll hear something in my head, or a noise outside that sounds like a melody and I'll put it in my phone. I'm inspired by life. I'm not sure who the collaborations will be with right now.

If not, what would be your dream duet? I guess since Michael Jackson is gone, I must choose amongst the living (sigh). I do love Katy Perry. Justin Beiber and I could do a love song... j/k!!! Bless his young heart. If only I were a few years younger.

What is something that drives you crazy, what is your biggest pet peeve? I hate the amount of homeless people there are in the world. I know it sounds beauty pageant but seriously I think about how bad you feel every time you pass one. I really don't like when people don't warn you before they let out their gas.

Agnes is not your typical “New Artist.” Actually, she’s not really that new — certainly not if “new” means a lack of experience. She is new in the sense that she has recently been discovered by American audiences, and luckily for us gays, she is performing at the White Party Palm Springs T Dance on Sunday, April 11th! With apt comparisons to Leona Lewis, Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Minogue, Agnes’ first US single, “Release Me,” is taking the U.S. by storm. With the single a certified club sensation ‘Release Me’ is pure pop perfection! There’s a new pop star in town.

America, meet Agnes.

1) “Release Me” plays constantly on my iPhone, I am obsessed! How does it feel to find success in the U.S.? It feels wonderful, not only in the US but all over Europe. I am extremely happy and excited at the same time :)

2) What are you currently listening to in your iPod/ mp3 player? Taio Cruz "Break Your heart” It is my fav song. Also Black Eyed Peas and Whitney Houston.

3) What was the last song that you listened to that you honestly enjoyed? Anna Bergendahl "This is my life" She is a young girl from Sweden - so sweet and wonderful.

4) Is there one song that you have heard that you connected with on such a level that you wish you had written it? "I Have Nothing" by Whitney Houston. Crazy good.

5) What inspired you to be a singer? I have always known..

6) If you had to pick ONE artist to sing with dead or alive who would it be? Mary J Blige. I love her charisma. To be on the same stage with Mary would be a dream come true.

7) How does it feel to follow in the White Party footsteps of Jennifer Lopez, Toni Braxton and Lady Gaga? I am so excited. Just to be there and be a part of the White Party weekend is absolutely amazing.

8) Who has been your favorite White Party Performer to date? Why? Lady Gaga...of course.

9) What can we expect from you on the White Party T-Dance stage? It is going to be one big party! I will have dancers on stage with me.

The Top Ten Q & A: The Freemasons

White Party Palm Springs is just around the corner and I’ve got some GREAT news for you! UK’s most successful (Grammy Nominated) Remixers, The Freemasons are spinning April 10th @ The Main Event Saturday Night! The Freemasons consists of producers Russell Small and James Wiltshire and have remixed songs for the biggest names in music! “The Freemasons have such a broad, worldwide following and this is something I have always wanted to have happen.” says White Party Founder/Producer Jeffrey Sanker, “I’m thrilled that finally the “stars were all in alignment” and it worked out with everyone’s schedule. It will be a night to remember!”

You’re finally spinning in the U.S! What took you so long? We didn’t want to do it by halves... we wanted everything set up right and to find the right people and parties to play for… The US is not the easiest country to get into these days so we also wanted all the immigration paperwork set up perfectly so we'd never have any problems coming across the pond and we're really glad we did it this was as now we're flying... Also the US DJ's play for a lot longer than in Europe so we had to go on some self-made Extensive DJ training courses . Russell's wrist was going limp after 2.5 hours, but now he can keep it up for about 3 weeks

Your upcoming White Party Palm Springs will be your first Southern California appearance. What can they expect when they hear you spin live? Its always going to be uplifting, vocals are very important to us not just from a DJ perspective, but personally and we've been lucky enough to work on some awesome songs and we buck against the trend of monophonic dance music and play a lot of music. For parties like this we always prepare something special for the crowd, something unique and this will be no exception - Hopefully we'll have something new from us to drop. Our first trip to that part of California, perfect!!


How do you both manage juggling DJ gigs world-wide and growing demand for your remix work? Do you multi-task while on the road? We do multitask, technology means that almost anything can be made portable, and it's quiet exciting getting inspired at a gig then knocking ideas up on laptops the day after. We also have started splitting the work quite a bit for European gigs. I (James) do the studio end of things whilst Russell gigs at the weekends. In 2008 we were losing Friday and Monday from the studio and Tuesday was quite frankly questionable at times, but now both ends of the work gets covered... We both always try and play together if possible in the US though - It’s just a fantastic new experience for us.

How did you guys meet? Through a mutual friend, Jason who was the other half of Russell's precious dance act, “Phats + Small” When I moved to Brighton from London (via Sydney) Russ and I started working on dance stuff almost immediately whilst Jason went off and did his own thing.

You have mixed countless of remixes for high profile names like Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue and Beyonce. What track was the most fun to remix? Why? The most fun was probably Whitney Houston’s “Million Dollar Bill” we have a very good friend called Scott who reckons he is the UK's biggest Whitney fan, so the whole atmosphere within our group of chums was excellent during those few weeks of work. Historically I think “Ring the Alarm” by Beyonce was the best to work on - we had the ideas in there very early on and knew they would work, so everyday was not at all stressful, just fun getting the vision finished.

Rumor has is that Techincs will soon discontinue the 1200s. Any thoughts on that? It's a shame as NOTHING sounds like Vinyl but they have to do it for practical reasons... when they are now only selling a fraction of the units they used to, we just can’t expect them to keep the production line open for sentimental reasons... Also the vinyl cutting lathes are an endangered species and in the UK the pressing plants are nearly all gone - you can't have a record deck with no fresh vinyl to feed it.

You spin all over the world for both gay and straight crowds. Have you noticed any difference between the two crowds? Do you tailor your sets differently when spinning for gay boys as opposed to more mainstream crowds? We can get away with so much more at a gay club in terms of musicality and vocals that we recently realized we are always really excited when playing gay venues, and normally apprehensive when playing straight venues. The one-note underground styles of dance music that come around every few years are here again in Europe and we're never sure how any straight venues are positioned until we get there - we are booked at some of these places because we sell records and can draw a crowd even though we might have to radically alter sets to suit the crowd and hardly play any of our own stuff.

In Gay clubs we are quite simply in our element as the records we make or remix are known and really appreciated and it's a joy to play the things you have worked so hard to get right in the studio to an Audience waving their arms around, also we can play our own stuff back to back in gay clubs and it just feels right. I have never seen a fight in any gay club - I wish the same could be said about the straight boys.


Have you noticed any difference between U.S. vs European or Australian crowds? Apart from the accent? he he... to be honest, not massively whilst playing. You guys and the Aussies have much better tans and better teeth.

Tell us about your process for when you remix a song. How do you approach it musically to give it your distinctive Freemasons sound? It actually changes every single time as we always try to work whatever we do around the vocal and song. For example, all our Beyonce mixes are drastically different from a music perspective, but being the same people working on them, they do have a flavor - I guess different dishes in the same restaurant would be a good analogy. We are also always taking some inspiration from the more underground end of music, be it the drums or production techniques, but most of all, we always try to make sure that chord progressions and basic sound of the mix compliment the original song - that’s what takes the time, but is also the most rewarding part.

What’s next for Freemasons? We're just about to start working on our own new album - we got carried away working with other people last year so it's a long overdue start. We are hoping to link up with some great singers, including the amazing Wynter Gordon from NYC who we met last year and really connected with. Studio has just been updated and we're all set. We're really excited this year, 2010 rocks already!

Let’s get to know one of our own favorite performers on a personal level. Let me reintroduce you to Sahara Davenport.

Where did your drag name Sahara Davenport come from? The name "Sahara" was inspired by an entertainer in Texas who I truly admired when I first started drag, Sierra (as in desert). I thought that she was amazing and had to be just like her. Davenport is my family name (Texas).

Who/ What inspired you to do Drag? I've always enjoyed dressing up. As a child, Halloween was my favorite Holiday. I also grew up in a family full of women, so drag was the perfect way to exercise all of the feminine "isms" and airs that I'd acquired as a child.

Why did you audition for RuPaul’s Drag Race? There aren't a lot of opportunities for drag queens outside of schlepping and working in bars. People are always saying, "You're too good for this" or "You deserve bigger!" However, they weren't offering me contracts or casting me in any shows. RPDR was a platform to showcase my talents and share my story with the world.

What do you think it takes to become Americas Next Top Drag Superstar? First and foremost, you've got to believe in yourself and know who you are. Second, determination and talent will get you far. If these things don't work, I've heard that "putting out" is the way to go (ask Shangela).

What is your favorite song to perform? Why? It changes from time to time. Right now, it's Destiny Child's, "Happy Face".

What is the hardest thing about being a Drag Queen? It’s not being perceived as a legitimate artist. I have gone on tons of auditions where casting directors would rather cast a clueless "actor" before they'd cast a real queen (who is actually capable of doing the job aesthetically and artistically).

What is the best part about being a Drag Queen? I'm a six foot tall man who gets paid to wear fierce women's clothes, exude femininity, and entertain. At the end of the night, people get me and want more!! Amazing.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Drag? I would still be an entertainer. It's in my blood and I love it.

Describe a Sahara Davenport experience in 5 words. One not to be missed!

What is next for Sahara Davenport? I've been collaborating with Vogue Evolution from ABDC [MTV’s Americas Best Dance Crew] (look out for us) and writing a one woman show that will play in a theater this Summer. Otherwise, I am still traveling, performing, and auditioning for the next big role.

The Top Ten Q & A: Jennifer Coolidge

Jennifer Coolidge is one of my favorite Actresses and she always “makes me want a hotdog real bad!” She is best known for playing "Stifler's mom," the consummate "MILF", in the film American Pie, and Paulette, the manicurist in Legally Blonde. This Silver Screen Diva will hit the stage for an incredible evening of laughter at Girl Bar Dinah Shore Week (GBDS) on Saturday night, April 3rd @ the Hotel Zoso Grand Ballroom! A portion of this event’s proceeds will go directly to the Human Rights Campaign Fund.

Do you have a genre of film, or type of film that you a particularly drawn to? How do you make your choices since so many of your characters have become so iconic? I am usually drawn to a hilarious comedy or a dramatic role with a great plot. But it’s easier for me to land a comedy because I have been in so many.

Which one of your previous characters was the most fun to play? I played a rap singer on Nip/ Tuck was one of my favorite jobs I’ve had! Her name was “Hot Coco” with a new song “Yo Stank” It was hilarious. It just shows how cool and fun the writers are on that show! It came out of no where and it was a thrill to be a part of it!

Any plans on performing “Yo Stank” on stage? I would have to look into getting permission for that. It would be fun! I love doing that character!

One of my favorite Interviews you did was on The Graham Norton Show in the UK with Enrique Iglesias. Enrique seemed so intimidated what was his deal? Do you have the problem with men feeling intimidated often? I don’t know if he felt intimidated but Enrique did seem kind of shy. Gay men and women are never uncomfortable! I love doing UK press, anything goes! When you show up to a TV Interview in the states everyone is so uptight!


How does it feel to be a Gay Icon? (If you didn’t know, the gays LOVE you!) I don’t know if I’m a gay icon but whatever I am I LIKE IT! I love the gays (men and woman) it’s been a mutual feeling for as long as I can remember. I feel incredibly lucky to be loved by the group that I love! I love the fact that the White Supremacists aren’t seeking me out to do a show!


Why do you think the GLBT Community relates to you so much? I don’t know, it is a mutual feeling of love. Maybe it’s that they think I could be a man in drag? Lol Maybe it’s because I’m “cartoony” and bigger than life? Lol

Have you ever seen a Drag Queen Impersonate you? If so, how did it make you feel? I was just in Raleigh, NC there was this drag queen named Eunyce Ray at FLEX and she knew every line I ever did in any of my movies. She was very big and dramatic looking! I was very impressed… she knew everything it was so flattering! These people spend hours learning and studying mannerisms and lines, It was AMAZING!

Most of us have only seen your films. What can we expect from you at Girl Bar Dinah Shore Week? I like that stand up Im not edited and I can say whatever I want… I like the freedom that I don’t get on TV or Film

What are you looking forward to most about “Girl Bar Dinah Shore?” Usually when I do a stand up act its really fast, I fly in and fly out. But not this weekend, I get to be there from the beginning to the end! I actually get to stick around and have fun… I love that im not going to miss the Full experience of Dinah! I hope to be the last person standing.

I think our readers would love to know how you first go into show business. I thought I might pursue acting because it was the only thing I attempted to do that people complimented… I never got compliments on anything growing up… No one ever said “OMG Jennifer you’re so organized, or you would be a great leader.” I got “You were great as the princess in Rumpelstiltskin!” In 3rd grade I remember that being the first moment in my life that someone came up and said something positive.

What was YOUR inspiration for wanting to be an actress? Acting inspired me, the more I did it the better I got! When doors started opening I realized what my calling was. At one point I was in school to be a makeup artist, but that door never opened but when I acted it happened! I feel like Acting chose me.

Did you feel that comedy was your best vehicle from the start of your career or did it just evolve? I was trying to be a dramatic actress forever! No one would see me that way! I was in acting class and a friend told me that I should try the comedic route.

What do you prefer, Film, TV, or Stage and why? I have reasons why I love all of them: I love Film, because I feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel there is a beginning, middle and end. TV can kind of drag out but it allows me to spend time with my dogs at home … Stand up allows me to travel and meet new people all over the world! I love the social aspect of it!

We know her best as a cast member of the longest running Female Impersonating Cabaret Show, “The Dream Girls Revue” and as 2009’s WeHo Award Winner for “The Most Outstanding Entertainer” But will Miss McMichaels live up to the hype on National Television? She’s got the experience, but is that enough for RuPaul’s Drag Race?

Each week, through the trials and tribulations of glam, glitter and show-stopping performances, one drag queen is eliminated until finding America's next drag superstar. Let’s get to know one of our own favorite performers on a personal level. Let me reintroduce you to Morgan McMichaels.

Where did your drag name Morgan McMichaels come from? Morgan came from Morgan le Fay, the queen of the fairies. McMichaels came from my Drag Mother the legendary Chad Michaels and Drag Father Adam Magee.

Who/ What inspired you to do Drag? Jenna Jameson… lol shes gorgeous! I was also inspired by Joan Jett, I loved the performance aspect of entertaining. I have the beauty and the body to pull off a gorgeous woman, so why not? lol

Why did you audition for RuPaul’s Drag Race? I wanted to take my performance art to the next level and it was a natural progression of my career. I wanted to showcase my talent to America and thanks to Logo and RuPaul I was given the opportunity of a lifetime. So I jumped on it and here I am!

What do you think it takes to become Americas Next Top Drag Superstar? It takes a combination of things, personality, a sense of humor, sex appeal, an eye for style and most importantly the willingness to do what it takes to win.

What is your favorite song to perform? Why? “So What” By Pink. It embodies what I think Morgan McMichaels is all about. It’s sexy, energetic and embodies the essence of Rock & Roll. It really gets the crowd going.

What is the hardest thing about being a Drag Queen? Isn’t it obvious? “Tucking” is hardest part of Drag. If you don’t know what “tucking” means… google it!

What is the best part about being a Drag Queen? The best part is having a platform to stand on. I can now use my voice as an outlet voice my opinions on things such as Marriage Equality and Prop 8! NOH8!

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Drag? I would probably be finished with school and working in the medical field. Before I moved to Los Angeles from Scotland I was in school studying to be an Immunologist.

The Top Ten Q & A: Michael Musto

Michael Musto, the popular columnist for the Village Voice and a mouthy groundbreaker releases a new book, Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back. This book is a collection of columns and essays and zooms in on Musto's favorite celebs to punk (Sean Combs, Paris Hilton); New York's most debauched and amusing nightlife experiences; and Musto's own odysseys, as he talks about the art of TV whoring and the allure of kinky sex, pausing to don drag to imagine what it must be like to be him as Lindsay Lohan as Marilyn Monroe. Stopping for some actual appreciation, the section called "Weirdo’s Are My Heroes" celebrates the oddballs and entertainers who’ve elevated the culture, shockingly including Jerry Springer and Sarah Silverman. The book also features an introduction written by Musto, as well as new pieces on universal fame in the new-media age, the state of the celebrity closet, and the appeal of blind gossip items.

1. How/ when did you decide to make a career in writing? As a pre-adolescent, I would see movies at the neighborhood theater and then come home and write reviews for myself on little index cards. I never imagined I could turn that into a career! But at Columbia, I wrote for the school paper and also freelanced on the side, so I got a taste for the sheer fun of being a print commentator. I decided to go for it when I graduated, and though I always secretly longed to be a performer too, I get my stage yayas out by being on TV a lot. So let me pat myself on the humpback--I made the right choice.

2. What makes Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back different from your other books? It's a collection like my last one, "La Dolce Musto: Writings By The World's Most Outrageous Columnist," but this one also has some original essays in it--about the fine art of blogging, the nuisance called social networking, the allure of blind items, and the closeting by the media of certain stars they decide are off limits. This is book is SO me. It's like a print version of Musto the man--as well as a sort of literary gold watch, since it commemorates my 25th year at the Village Voice! Read it and enter my twisted yet fertile mind.

3. What is the best thing about being a critic? First of all, I basically get paid to go to parties, premieres, Broadway shows, and nightclubs. The events I get to witness and people I get to talk to are astounding. And then at the end of the week, I get to sit down and write whatever the hell I want about it all! It's cathartic and exciting and as a result of letting out my opinions and observations, I don't need therapy! Plus the column has become a home base whereby on the side I get to also do a blog, write books like this, and make public appearances. It's the best! I recommend it for everyone.

4. Who is your favorite critic/ gossip columnist (other than yourself)? Why? I have to love Perez Hilton--and he gave me the blurb, "Michael Musto is God!" And naturally I love Keith Olbermann, whose show I'm on, and Rachel Maddow, who comes on after him. They put a sparkplug up Republicans' butts and their fiery comments really make a difference. I also admire theater critics (like the New York Times') for their dedication to seeing all kinds of shows and dissecting them with a fine scalpel. But my favorite critic is "Anonymous"--the person who sits back and posts outrageous comments on blogs (like mine), often making them extremely funny and readable. But sometimes he/she can be really mean!

5. You coined the word 'celebutard.' What does it mean? Who is the ultimate 'celebutard'? Why? I didn't know I coined that until I read it on Wikipedia! The things you learn! But I guess it's a semi affectionate (but dismissive) term for those who crave the spotlight and get it but sometimes don't know what to do with it. It's for the people who have it all--except a clue as to how to proceed with it! A couple of years ago, this referred to Lindsay, Britney, and Paris, but I honestly think two of those three have regrouped and done just fine. And I'm rooting for the third! Nowadays celebutard could refer to anyone from Octomom to Tiger Woods' many girlfriends. These people seem clueless at times but they're great copy. The ultimate celebutard? My cousin the Elvis impersonator.

6. I had no idea that you were (sort of) involved in the whole Party Monster shebang! If you had not written in your columns about the murder of Angel, most people say that Michael Alig and Robert "Freez" Riggs might have never been caught. What are your thoughts on that whole situation? Will you be afraid when/if Michael Alig is released? I am double bolting my door right now just in case Alig gets out. Kidding! He'll probably want to throw a party for me. After all, he seemed to want to get caught. After the hideous killing, I ran a big blind item called "Night Clubbing," spilling the alleged details of what happened, including the hammer, the Drano, the box in the river, everything. Everyone knew who I meant, including Page Six, which picked up on it and it then became a really big story. And of course I kept writing up the whole saga, full of mixed feelings for Alig, who I knew was a party throwing genius while also being a bratty type who, without boundaries, spiraled into a moral abyss. New York now is so sanitized and safe compared to back then--and I don't always say "Thank God" about that. We need some edge. But no murders.

7. Any advice for aspiring writers? Read the writers you admire and learn from them, but don't copy. Keep at it and you'll find your own voice. It might not happen right away--it didn't for me--but in time you'll come upon your sense of style and ethics and you'll know how far to go to make your points. Also, be aggressive. Especially in this landscape, it's not easy to become a professional writer, so really go after it--but not so much that editors take out restraining orders.

8. Any other passions? If you were not a writer what do you think you would be doing? I get to do everything I want! I've written a novel, done music videos, appeared on game shows. People say 'You should take a vacation and go see movies.' But I see movies every night! And I've even traveled around the world! I even occasionally have time to read books on the rare moments when I'm on the subway. I guess I could go bowling more, but hey, I'll live if I don't!

9. When you appeared in the Cyndi Lauper Music Video for "Hey Now (Girls Just Want to Have Fun) you were in Drag. Was it your first time? What was the best part? It wasn't my first time--I have a past--but it was interesting to be with so many great drag queens and to be directed by Cyndi herself! And the choreographer was future Tony winner Jerry Mitchell. He didn't care for my ratty outfit (he was right), so they switched me into something jazzier. He also didn't care for my dancing. But I never said I was a dancer! I hardly even said I was a writer! Still, it was a really special experience and we got to perform the song live at Yankee Stadium for the Gay Games!!!

10. Speaking of Queens, if you had to pick one, who is your favorite Drag Queen? I love them all because they have the balls, as it were, to dig into their inner fabulous woman and bring her out for the world to see. My favorite is Peppermint for being such a great all-around entertainer, but I also give props to Bunny, Epiphany, Sherry Vine, Shequida, and so on and so on.

The Top Ten Q & A: Shangela

Who is the newest and biggest name in the Los Angeles Drag World? Where did she come from? How is she doing it!? What is all the BUZZ!!!???

It is none other then SHANGELA, The Debutantess of the Deep South, hailing from Paris, Texas this young diva has come, seen and conquered the drag scene. Not only is she on Season Two of MTV Logo’s hit series RuPaul’s Drag Race, but she has just won the first EVER Miss California Entertainer of the Year Pageant at The House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard.

When I say “won” the pageant that is an understatement… She DESTROYED the competition. The presentation was flawless, the evening gown was breathtaking and her talent was well… to die for! Back flips, dancers and even a DVD intro where she was imposed in the “New Moon” Movie Trailer.

Shangela has made is very clear that this is not a game and she is here to stay. Remember the name Shangela, better yet, I’d like to see you try to forget it, I feel like she has only begun.

How long have you been doing drag? What/ Who inspired you to become a Drag Entertainer? I have been doing drag exactly 373 days! I've always been fascinated with the art of drag performance. It goes back to when I was a back-up dancer for some of the best drag performers in Dallas, Texas. Texas drag performers are NO JOKE. I learned a lot. From then I kind of fell into being in the drag spotlight and I'm loving it more every day!


What was one thing you learned (took home) from RuPaul's Drag Race? In addition to a free make-up kit? Haha! One of the greatest drag experiences of my young career.

Who did you connect with the most on the show? There are tons of great girls. The entire cast is absolutely amazing, but there is no doubt that my strongest connection is to my sister, Sahara Davenport from New York City. We attended college together in Dallas, are best friends, and had NO IDEA we would both be on the show until we arrived on set. Watch the new season and you'll see our reactions! At The California Entertainer of the Year Pageant (EOY) you did back flips, death-drops (SHABLAM!), disappearing acts and costume changes... How long did it take for you to prepare for EOY? Now that the pageant is over... I'm gonna give you the honest answer that many won't believe. Because I was in Texas for the entire month of December for my mothers surgery, I returned to Los Angeles and with the help of my friends I put my entire package together in 12 days! LONG, LONG rehearsals. And now... A BITCH IS TIRED!

You beat out some stiff competition; some of the contestants have been doing pageants for YEARS! How does it feel to have become the FIRST EVER Ms California Entertainer of the Year? I was among some of the greatest performers in the state of California for California EOY. I was humbled and felt an even greater responsibility to bring an A-game package and hope for the best.


What can people expect from you at Nationals? Competition at the nationals is a whole new ball game for me. I'm going to have to bring even more kicks, tricks, and rhinestones!


What is playing in your ipod/ mp3 player right now? Telephone (Gaga/Beyonce) because I'll be soon performing it with my home girl Rhea Litre! SEE THAT VIDEO HERE

When you are done with drag (if that ever happens) what do you think and/or want your legacy to be? My heart lies in comedy and making people laugh. I am actually building a career in stand-up comedy and I'll be performing this Saturday January 16th, 8pm at the Comedy Store ("Belly Room") on Sunset!

It's been 10 years since Masterbeat launched New Year's in California, and over those 10 years New Year's Los Angeles has grown to become THE destination to ring in the New Year, with thousands of visitors celebrating on the west coast, the past 10 years has seen Masterbeat take you to legendary LA venues.

Celebrate 10th anniversary as Masterbeat presents "X: New Year's Los Angeles 2010" at the Mayan Theater in downtown Los Angeles. They are pulling out all the stops as and bringing the superstar duo DJ and production team Rosabel to man the decks to ring in the new decade.

Los Angeles-based DJ Brett Henrichsen has been a favorite and has spun at the leading dance clubs in worldwide. He’s the mastermind behind the uber-successful Masterbeat record label and has been busy putting together one of the hottest New Years Eve Parties in Downtown Los Angeles at The Mayan.

1. What motivated you to become a full-time DJ/ Promoter? My love of dance music.
2. You have mixed countless of remixes for high profile names. What track was the most fun to remix? Why? That’s like asking me to pick my favorite baby. I’d like to say I love them all equally but those that know me know I favor my ladies. I love a great screaming diva track.
3. This Question is for all the curious "bachelors" What do you look for in a partner? It’s all about the eyes and the smile. But truthfully, I don’t have time for a boyfriend. I am dating my work right now. I don’t even have time for my dog.
4. What Recording Artist would you like to work with next? I would love to work with U2 and Lady Gaga.
5. What is your favorite thing about New Years in Los Angeles? Los Angeles parties just as hard as the boys in NYC, but we have one big advantage. The weather! New Years is always the coldest day of the year in New York. LA starts the year right.
6. How does producing an event compare to remixing a record? Both cause big headaches in the development stage but the end result is always worth it!
7. What can people and party go-ers expect from DJ's Ralphi Rosario & Abel? Rosabel never fails to impress. They’re two of the best DJs on the scene right now.
8. Other than yourself, who is your favorite DJ? Why? Rosabel, Dave Aude, Motoblanco, Freemasons… I can go on and on. What I love about dance music is that every DJ adds his or her own flavor to the scene.
9. What separates this party from all the NYE events? Spread over three days (dec 31-Jan 2), we are the biggest New Year gay party. We offer an outstanding ambience and blend in the hottest music by Rosabel, large video screens and an exciting laser show!
10. How late will you stay open? Our party doesn’t end until January 2nd. That may seem like a long time for some, but we’re launching a new decade this year, people. We have a lot to celebrate.
