Profile: Jimmy James

The Legendary Jimmy James has moved to Los Angeles from New York City and HE MEANS BUSINESS. The artist formerly known as "Marilyn Monroe" has definitely evolved and is releasing his own original dance album titled, “Jamestown” featuring the top ten Billboard club hit “FASHIONISTA.” James has established a residency at The Upright Cabaret located at Rockwell in Los Feliz, CA. As if that wasn’t enough to keep this man busy he has just shot a reality show pilot called "RE-INVENTING JIMMY JAMES" which is being pitched right now. So many things in the works… So much to tell!
Let me reintroduce you to the Legendary Jimmy James:
Is Jimmy James your real name? If not, where did it come from? My real name is JAMES JUDE JOHNSON. I always went by Jimmy Johnson but that sounded so "sports player" and I was not a sports player, I was a Drama Queer. My friend in High School used to call me 'Jimmy J.' I liked the sound of it and extended it to 'James.' Being a Gemini I thought it was cleaver to have both names be twins: the informal name and the formal.
What moved you from New York to Los Angeles? I love Show Business and LA has it here.
I lived in LA between 1989 & 1993. I only moved to New York for Dance Music in '93. In the early 90's LA was soaking in Rock & Roll ONLY. New York held promise for me in Dance Music. In '98 I released "Who Wants To Be Your Lover." Years later after finally achieved my goal to write a hit Dance Song (FASHIONISTA) and a full dance album (JAMESTOWN), the music industry changed so much. I felt I wanted to get back to LA where so much real show business happens. I love NYC, but right now there's a Bank on every corner and it made me bitter. Also after 15 Winters I was done. I'm also here to stalk Derek Hough from Dancing With The Stars! Don't tell anybody.
Tell me a bit about your Dance Record "Jamestown" I'm very proud of my album "JAMESTOWN." I wrote all the songs. It tells stories within the Dance Music genre. All the stories come from my life: gay, drag, fashion, heartbreak, love, dance floors, happiness, jealousy, fame and futuristic predictions. Dare I say, so many of the things I write about are similar to GaGa's first album, it's spooky. She and I are inspired by a lot of the same things in art and life. I did not know about her album until mine was done.
What goes through your mind when you see MANY of the THOUSANDS of Drag Queens that perform "Fashionista?" I LOVE IT! It's a dream come true! It's the BIGGEST compliment! I've gone on YouTube to see queens around the world doing it. It was something that I dreamed about ever since I went into my first Gay bar to see a drag show. I always wondered if I would ever be able to write a song that Queens would want to perform. I was jealous back in the day when I would see queen's doing RuPaul's "Supermodel." It's an even bigger compliment when it gets played on film or tv because I get paid for that. I'm so happy to make money while lying in bed. Just like the old days. I feel I've accomplished something I can finally call my own.
How does performing with Upright Cabaret differ from Clubs? For the UPRIGHT I show a wide range of my talent, the voice impressions and my original music. For CLUBS it's basically a track date of my own music from JAMESTOWN including FASHIONISTA. Cabaret you make love, Club dates it's a quicker slam bam thank you man! Both are fun for me.
Whats next for Jimmy James? I've just shot a Reality show pilot called "Re-Inventing Jimmy James" and it's being shopped around now. I'm also going to tour more, hopefully mostly on the West Coast for now. And I'm going to be making more appearances in West Hollywood so watch out! NO ONE UGLY ALLOWED!

Profile: Barbie Q

Photo of Barbie Q in Lady Gaga's "Telephone" Video
How many of you guys have noticed the FIERCE Black Woman in Lady Gaga's Music Video for "Telephone?" Well your eyes did deceive you! That "woman" is one of the premier Female Illusionists in Los Angeles. BARBIE Q! Her cameos made the video for me and dont forget those SICKENING VOICE OVERS! lol
Let me introduce you to Barbie Q:
What was it like on set with Lady Gaga for "Telephone"? Well let me tell you. I was the ONLY drag queen on the set. I walked on and knew like five people! It was awesome! Lady Gaga made sure that all the players were taken cared for food-wise, make-up and all the above.
I heard the radio interview on how she wanted the beginning of the video to be an homage to the gay, lesbian and trangender community. Once I heard that, it made sense.
I thought once she was on set it would be that whole “Don’t look at her, don’t talk to her” kind of thing. BUT so not that. She made jokes, looked at each one of us and made us look better. She told the hairdressers to put homegirl’s hair in that bow!
I was impressed with how involved in the process, she wanted to look at every take, I could tell it was a collaboration, not just the star performing. They were a team! It was very inspiring!
In all, it was an opportunity of a lifetime and I will be forever grateful to be in video history!
How long have you been doing drag? What/ Who inspired you to become a Drag Entertainer? Well I started back in 1992, did it for 8 years around Orange County, LA and Long Beach. Then I stopped, went back to school, took care of my Mom, got a boyfriend, got a degree and Josh Peace and I reconnected about 2 years ago. He told me that Barbie Q was just what people needed again. I told him he was crazy, but he convinced me, and I am doing it on my own terms. Always for real and never ever fake.
What inspired me is the fact that it was an outlet. I have a voice as a gay Black man, but I have a louder voice as a Black Drag Queen. People listened and what I chose to say meant a lot to a lot of people. I love musical theatre. Choreographed 7 musicals in community theatre, so this was just a transgression.
Tell me about your debut dance single "Club Talk" Well I got together with DJ Sol last year and we were talking about the old school house music and I told her about club talk. It’s the concept of people who talk a lot of yin yang in the clubs but never come through and I was so tired of that. I am real in and out of the club. And I expect the same, I just have a hard time getting that sometimes. So we came up with the lyrics, the beat. I am looking to re-release it actually and get some DJs to remix it.
What is playing in your iPod/ mp3 player right now? Right now it is Adele. I love her voice and passion. I am also discovering the old school house music again and living!
In 3 words please describe a "Miss Barbie Q". Sassy, Insightful and Down-to-Earth.
What is your favorite song to perform and why? Hmm…there are so many! I love the old school house music, but then I like the early 90s stuff. I guess I love performing to songs that make the audience go “Who does that song?” or something that they haven’t heard in a long time. Music brings back so many memories and I love that.
What is next for Miss Barbie Q? Well, I am singing in Kelly’s Mantle’s one woman show called “The Illusion of My Confusion” running March 26th through April 11th at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center at the Renberg Theatre.
I am auditioning for plays, films, commercials and such. I am collaborating with people for some shows we are putting together. I am also booked to sing and perform at a wedding in Napa this Spring.
I am also booked all around LA, Silverlake, Long Beach, San Diego, and San Francisco performing at places like Here Lounge, Hamburger Mary’s, Fubar, MJs and many more. Next stop New York (?), UK (?), Berlin maybe (?)
