The Top Ten Q & A: Nina Flowers

Eccentric. Androgynous. Breathtaking. Those are only a few things I can say about the runner up on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Nina Flowers. She was my pick to win, but maybe she was too fierce for the show. She has captivated the US nationwide—and in my opinion—the HOTTEST import from Puerto Rico since Ricky Martin. There is plenty coming up for Nina Flowers- check it out here:

1 Nina Flowers… how the hell did you come up with that name?
One of the entertainers that inspired me is Nina Hagen, so I took on her first name, and I translated my last name from Flores to Flowers.

2 What first intrigued you about drag and when did you start doing drag?
I started doing drag after attending a beauty school in Puerto Rico. I practiced on myself and liked how I could change and evolve into a new persona by using make up. It also allowed me to be creative, not only with the make-up but with the drama that can come with it. I started doing drag when I was around 19 or 20 years old. I started out as a club kid, and then evolved into what ever intrigued me.

3 Who are your drag inspirations?
Like I said earlier, Nina Hagen – I love her character and the way she performs. I also found Boy George, the Eurhythmics, Cindy Lauper and RuPaul herself - as inspirational figures that added to my drag personality.

4 What is your favorite song to perform and why?
I have many songs I like doing, and I can’t say I have favorites. While I like high energy, my goal is always to be different and creative with how I interpret the song- I focus on the drama of the song. I’ll have requests from time to time for a number and while I don’t mind doing them, I can’t say I enjoy repeating a song- I get bored easily believe some magic can get lost if I’m not inspired to perform it.

5 What made you move from your home country of Puerto Rico?
When I left Puerto Rico it was a big risk. I had made a good name in Puerto Rico as a performer and DJ and hated the idea of moving and starting over- but also felt I needed something different and I wanted to seek other opportunities. When I met Antonio, my partner, I was willing to take that risk. He made it easier to make the move- he’s been very supportive. So while it may sound mushy, it was love that helped me make the move.

6 Who were your most and least favorite contestants on Rupauls Drag Race?
I think all the girls were great- there will be personality conflicts and that’s normal, it’s going to happen, but I’d rather not point out one contestant versus another. I don’t think it’s fair considering what a great opportunity we all have and the difference of experience of each one of us.

7 What was your favorite challenge on Rupaul’s Drag Race?
The first one, “Drag on a Dime” I enjoyed the most, though I also enjoyed the ABSOLUT Vodka challenge. These two were my favorite because they allowed me to be creative, and I’m very good with my imagination and coming up with ideas.

8 What has changed for you since the show? Any crazy fans, fan mail or stalkers?
The fans have been amazing. I’m honored to have the chance to entertain and be recognized for my performance. Though, one big change is my ability to keep up with e-mails. I regret that while one time I could respond to almost everyone– now it’s almost impossible for me to keep up. Now, I have to focus on the blog on myspace to respond to fans whenever I have an opportunity.

9 You have recently made cameo appearances in West Hollywood @ The Dreamgirls Revue @ RAGE and watched the show. Who was your favorite performer there and why?
I thought they were all great performers– fierce show!! One performer that had me amazed was the host, Chad Michaels. His costumes were — amazing!! You can tell he is seasoned with much experience.

10 You are already known as a fabulous DJ, drag queen and make-up artist… what is next for Nina Flowers? Any ideas for music or any upcoming projects?
There are so many things that I want to do aside from my drag persona. My priority is to dedicate myself to music and becoming a recognized DJ and music producer as well. There are some recognized DJs in the circuit scene that want to produce music with me, and I’m really looking forward to the great opportunities.
